Sorry for off-topic. I just saw your Hades with amazing accessories on Tumblr. Was Playmobil interested in the idea? My 5 year old grandson likes to play with his Greek Gods and hero’s like Jason and Achilles and many times he expressed his wish to also have Hades who captured his imagination. It would be nice if Playmobil sold this figure!
Thanks! I never showed these figures to Playmobil. Agree Hades would be a nice add -- since I made those two Playmobil has made a Dionysus who comes with the Mount Olympus set. (Though I like mine better.)
If you want to make your own Hades, the recipe is pretty easy -- I think he's an Egyptian slave/laborer underneath. The toga's standard but painted black. The crown, keys and chair are all from existing sets, and the staff is a wizard's staff with the jewel between the prongs removed. The dog is Ares' dog, with two extra heads. I was nervous about the heads but it wasn't that hard -- the trick is to cut the necks at an angle so they can be glued onto the torso and look right. Big relief there.
There are other custom versions of Hades on the web, and the misstep I think a lot of people make is turning him into some kind of undead king, like a D&D lich or something. The Greeks didn't see him that way -- he's gloomy, not scary.
The hardest part was the inscription for the column. I made the inscription in Photoshop after figuring out the ancient Greek (or close to it, anyway) and then turned it into a white sticker I bought from Vistaprint. $8 or so. Then put the sticker over an existing column and voila!
Anyway, all the parts are available on eBay or collectors' sets, if you wanna give it a try!
Really cool to hear about kids learning to love reading via your books.
Thanks David!
